Arsenal are close to signing Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck on loan according to reports coming to light. They were little noises coming out initially about Arsenal’s potential move for the 23 year old earlier today, but it seems that the English striker could be about to swoop Old Trafford for the Emirates.
It was widely believed that Arsene Wenger would look to bring in a striker with a reputation for scoring goals particularly after the club’s top scorer from last season Oliver Giroud got injured. And he was ruled out until the New Year at the earliest.
This particular news of the Danny Welbeck deal is coming on the back of the heels of the high of being linked to the likes of Paris Saint Germain striker Edinson Cavani and the newly signed Manchester United striker Radamel Falcao this summer.
The English striker Danny Welbeck struggled under David Moyes last season as he barely got on the score sheet. However, he was told last month by Louis Van Gaal that he is free to leave Manchester United.
The Danny Welbeck loan move is apparently Arsenal entering a panic mode as the transfer window enters it final hours. Already there are media claims that the player does not want a loan move but is seeking for a permanent deal to Arsenal.
Although he has the pace and work ethics to trouble defences, he obviously lacks the key touch of a consistent goal scorer, and was used mostly as a roving midfielder to mark out players during Alex Ferguson’s time at Old Trafford.
He is not what Arsenal needs, as the club already have enough strikers who struggle in front of goal already, ala Yaya Sanogo. Whether Arsene Wenger thinks he can iron out his short comings remains to be seen.
It is a shame that Arsenal are going from the high of signing Mesut Ozil last summer, to a potential low of signing a Manchester United reject.
Arsenal needed a signing that could lift the club for the tough battles ahead this season as the Ozil effect had on the club, but going by what is going on between now and when the transfer window shuts in few hours, it is yet a grim situation once again.
For all intent and purpose, the club is better off giving Joel Campbell a chance as he has the experience of playing in the Champions League and World Cup consistently. Instead of Danny Welbeck that has lost count of where the goal is.
It is yet another disappointing window from an Arsenal point of view as holes in squad have not been filled.
